A Word of Advice to Steer Clear of Sin

Be Vigilant in Piety and Obedience

In his wisdom, Ibn Rajab once said; "O son of Adam, if you knew your worth, you would not humiliate it with immoral acts. You are the chosen creature among all creatures. Heaven is provided for you, if you are pious. Heaven is the region of the pious, while the world is the domain of Satan.

So, how can you willingly leave your own territory? How can you join the crowds in Satan's territory and boldly confess and fight there? Even most of you have become his followers?

Indeed, Allah expelled Satan from the sky for your sake, when he was reluctant to bow down to your father (Adam), and Allah asked for your closeness to Him so that you could become special people and be included in His group. However, you instead became enemies with Him and instead made His enemies your friends.”

Remember in the Qur'an Allah says; 'Should you take him and his descendants as your leaders apart from Me, while they are your enemies? The devil is very bad as a substitute (Allah) for the wrongdoers." (QS. Al-Kahfi: Verse 50).

Pearls of Wisdom were also conveyed by Harith al-Muhasibi, this was to reveal the stupidity of a fraudster. Al-Muhasibi said “Know that every mind that is not accompanied by three things is a deceitful mind; First, a nature that prioritizes disobedience over obedience. Second, prioritize ignorance over knowledge. Third, prioritizing the world over religion.”

Al-Muhasibi views that every person is "fraudster" It is not good for oneself and for others if a person prioritizes sin, ignorance, and worldliness over obedience, knowledge, and religion. This indicates the great loss caused by lust that overcomes common sense.

Humans who always prioritize evil, stupidity and worldly affairs are the group who are deceived by fraudsters as mentioned by Ibn Qayyim al-Jauziah in his book 'Talbîs Iblîs'He said that the devil had deceived a group of people in matters of worshipping Allah. They were the ones who prioritized what was sunnah than that wajîb. Hopefully we are not included in this group of negligent humans.

Be Aware of Time

Ibnul Jauzi explained it in one of his wills and he collected it in a Risâlah Ilâ Waladî. The advice was intended for his son, Abu Qasim Badaruddin: "Know that days are but moments, moments are but breaths, and each breath is a precious treasure. Beware! Do not let that breath simply disappear without any value. If you do, you will see your treasury empty on the Day of Resurrection, and you will regret it.

Even though in an authentic history from the Prophet Muhammad. “Whoever reads Subhanallah al-Azhîm wa Bihamdih, a date palm tree will be planted for him in Paradise." (Narrated by Tirmidhi, Ibn Hiban and Hakim from Jabir). If we think about it, this hadith suggests to people who waste their time, how many date palm trees they miss.

Hasan al-Basri said, “O children of Adam, you are actually days. When a day passes, a part of you disappears. When a part disappears, the whole will surely disappear. If you realize that, then act!” In a different editorial, Basyar Ibn Harith al-Hafi often said, “Yesterday is dead, today is uncertain, and tomorrow is not certain, so hurry to do good.” (Basyar ibn Harith: 56, Dâr al-Ma'rifah).

Any time you spend on anything other than obedience to God is wasted. What a loss it is to spend time not devoted to obedience.

Heart Tourism

The journey of the heart is more memorable than the physical journey. How many people have reached Baitullah with his body, while after returning from the House of Allah, his heart is no longer connected to the owner of the House of Allah. How many people perform physical worship and other deeds, such as helping others, but their hearts are infected showing off people want to see), envy, incitement and desire.

In fact, these deeds do not differ in form or quantity. However, they differ in the heart. Therefore, the heart determines every deed performed. Guarding the heart is the same as guarding deeds. However, maintaining deeds so that they remain connected to the heart sometimes presents challenges, because the heart is not yet accustomed to these deeds.

The journey of the heart is a journey that is always held tightly by the companions of the Prophet Muhammad. In fact, the heavy burden for them is to always keep their hearts tuma'ninah and always connected to Allah. Because Allah is the true guardian of the heart.

Finally, a beautiful piece of advice from Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali: "Months, years, nights, and days are all opportunities before death, times for action. Then they will vanish and disappear. But the One who created them is always watching every action of His servants." (Lathâif al-Ma'ârif, 452)
