Sincerity: The Sacred Secret Between a Servant and His Lord

There's a word that often comes to mind, but rarely settles in the heart. It's light on the tongue, but heavy on the scales of good deeds. The word is sincere. It is like a sacred secret between a servant and his Lord-too great for angels to know so that they can write it, too deep for Satan to know so that he can corrupt it, and too pure for lust to know so that he can distort it.

In terms of language, the root word '‘khalasha'’ In the Qur'an it is mentioned as many as thirty-eight times in various forms, but the meaning is always the same: to purify, clarify, and cleanse from all polluting mixtures.

Allah himself emphasized that sincerity is the main foundation of all worship. In Surah al-Bayyinah verse 5, He said:

وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ God bless you الزَّكَاةَ وَذَٰلِكَ دِينُ الْقَيِّمَةِ

“"Even though they were not ordered except to worship Allah by purifying obedience to Him in a straight religion, and so that they offer prayers and pay zakat. And that is the straight religion."”

Notice how Allah prioritizes sincerity before prayer and zakat. This is a profound theological message: without sincerity, worship is like a body without a soul—it appears alive, but is dead in His sight. Surah az-Zumar verses 2-3, Allah reminds us again:

God willing God willing, God willing, God willing, God willing الْخَالِصُ

“"Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book with the truth. So worship Allah with pure obedience to Him. Remember, only Allah belongs to pure religion."”

Allah confirms that the religion is clean (ad-din al-khalish) belongs only to Him. There is no place for falsehood. Any charity that is not based on sincerity will return to the doer without reward. As the Prophet ﷺ said in Hadith Qudsi: “"I am the partner who needs no partner. Whoever acts by associating others with Me, I will leave him with that partner."” What a soul-stirring warning.

Sincerity is closely related to intention, but they are not the same. Intention is the will of the heart, encompassing both good and bad. Sincerity, on the other hand, is the purity of intention directed solely towards God. Its main opposite is showing off‘'—doing good deeds because you want to be seen and praised by people—and polytheism—worshipping other than Allah. Riya' pollute charity, polytheism destroy it. Both will not be accepted by Allah.

Ibnu Qayyim Al-Jauziyah explains in Madarijus Salikin that sincerity of having three levels. First, to remove one's views on deeds and free oneself from demands for rewards, to cleanse deeds from the desire for praise or fear of being criticized by humans. Second, shame of deeds before Allah—aware of one's own shortcomings so that one does not dare to look upon deeds with pride.

Third, Sincerely detaching oneself from the ego, so that one's deeds are done solely for Allah, without expecting anything other than His approval. This is the pinnacle of sincerity: doing good deeds like breathing, without thinking about who is watching, without expecting praise, simply because it is one's nature as a servant. One no longer looks at one's deeds, but rather at the grace of Allah that enables one to do good deeds. As His word says in Surah an-Nur verse 21:

وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ مَا زَكَىٰ مِنكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ أَبَدًا وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ يُزَكِّي مَن يَشَاءُ

“"And if it were not for Allah's grace and mercy towards you, none of you would be clean forever, but Allah cleanses whom He wills."”

Allah commands us to be sincere in all existence. In Surah Al-An'am verses 162-163:

قُلْ إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ God bless you وَأَنَا God willing

“"Say: 'Indeed, my prayers, my worship, my life and my death are only for Allah, the Lord of the worlds. He has no partner; and that is what I have been commanded to do, and I am the first to submit.'"‘

Subhanallah! Prayer, worship, even life and death must be for Allah. This is the pinnacle of Islam—when all breath and heartbeat are directed solely to Him. Surah al-A'raf verse 29, Allah also commands:

وَأَقِيمُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وَادْعُوهُ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ

“"And turn your faces in every mosque and pray to Him in pure obedience to Him."”

This commandment is not just a physical direction, but a direction of the heart. When standing in the mosque, raising one's hands in prayer, or prostrating oneself—is the heart truly directed solely to Allah, or does one still glance at the creatures watching? This is the greatest challenge: keeping worship from being tainted by ostentation.

Sincerity produces divine help. In Surah al-Anfal verse 70, Allah says:

God bless you God willing

“"If Allah knew the goodness in your hearts, He would surely give you something better than what was taken from you and He would forgive your sins."”

The scholars interpret “"khairan"” as sincerity and faith. Likewise inside Surah al-Fath verse 18, Allah praises the friends who take allegiance with sincerity:

لَّقَدْ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ يُبَايِعُونَكَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ فَعَلِمَ مَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ فَأَنزَلَ God bless you

“"Indeed, Allah was pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree, so Allah knew what was in their hearts and sent calm down on them and rewarded them with near victory."”

Allah not only recognizes sincerity, but also sends down tranquility and grants victory. This is the fruit of sincerity—peace of heart and victory in this world. A sincere person need not worry about human praise, for they have earned Allah's approval. They need not fear losing popularity, for they have earned the love of the Creator.

The story of a friend in Bukhari's hadith illustrates how great sincerity is in almsgiving. He gave alms, then his alms fell into the hands of thieves, then into the hands of adulterers, then into the hands of rich people. Every time, people gossiped, but he still said it, “O Allah, all praise be to You,” and continue to give alms.

Finally, someone said to him, “"Your alms that fall into the hands of thieves may make them stop stealing, those that fall into the hands of adulterers may make them stop committing adultery, and those that fall into the hands of rich people may make them learn a lesson."” This friend's sincerity is not affected by who the recipient is—what is important is his intentions towards Allah, not the glory of the recipient. This is true sincerity.

However, sincerity is a never-ending struggle. Every time you feel that you have sincere, showing off’ It comes in different colors and forms. It may come as a desire for others to recognize one's goodness, as a feeling of pride when praised, or as a fear of being criticized for not doing a certain good deed.

Imam Al-Ghazali said: “"Sincerity is a very difficult thing, because Satan always tries to destroy it. And when a person tries to cleanse his heart of riya', Satan comes up with another kind of riya': riya' in cleansing the heart of riya'!"’ How cunning our enemy is, and how we need to constantly ask God for help.

Think about it—how often do we do good deeds out of fear of criticism? How often do we do good deeds out of a desire for praise? How often do we worship with our hearts torn between God and humanity? Sincerity is not easy.

It is the fiercest battlefield, where lust, demons, and subtle whispers collide with the light of faith. But never give up. Every effort to purify one's intentions, every prayer asking for sincerity, every step away from riya' - all are recorded as valuable deeds in the sight of Allah.

Know that sincerity is the key to happiness—happiness in this world because the heart is at peace and independent of creatures, and happiness in the hereafter because deeds are accepted by Him. As Allah says in Surah al-Bayyinah verse 8:

“"Their reward with God is the paradise of 'Adn beneath which rivers flow, they will abide therein forever. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. That is the reward for those who fear their Lord."‘

May Allah make us His sincere servants. And may every moment of our lives—in prayer, worship, life, and death—be dedicated solely to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. He has no partner, and that is what we are commanded to do.

وَمَا تَوْفِيقِي إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَإِلَيْهِ أُنِيبُ

“"And there is no taufik for me except with the help of Allah. Only to Him do I put my trust and only to Him will I return."” (QS. Hud: Verse 88)
