Ulema's explanation of women's private parts in front of their mahram

Islamic law orders every woman to cover her private parts in front of men who are not...[1]All Muslim women should be aware of this: covering the entire body except the face and palms. However, what many women rarely realize is that there are certain parts of their aurat (awrah) that they must cover, even in front of their mahram (mahram).

Mahram are people who are forbidden to marry, whether forbidden due to bloodline such as father and siblings, or forbidden due to marriage such as in-laws, or forbidden due to breastfeeding.[2].

Scholars have different opinions regarding a woman's private parts when in front of her mahram:

First, Some scholars are of the opinion that the things that are permissible to be seen on a woman's body in front of her mahram are the things that are normally visible when she is doing her daily chores at home, such as her neck, hair, upper and lower arms, and calves. This opinion is held by scholars of the Maliki and Hanbali schools of thought, as well as some scholars of the Shafi'i school of thought.[3].

Second, Some other scholars are of the opinion that a woman's aurat in front of her mahram is like a man's aurat, namely from the navel to the knees. This opinion is held by the Shafi'i and Hanafi schools of thought, as well as the opinion held by Imam Al-Qadhi of the Hanbali school of thought.[4].

If we look at the two opinions above, we understand that all of them agree that it is forbidden for a woman to wear clothes or pants above her knees or only thigh-length, even if it is in front of her mahram.

We find that some women feel that because they are in front of their mahram, they can wear thigh-length clothing. Of course, this is a mistake and should be avoided, especially since we live in an era where... adultery slander it can even happen even with a mahram as we see in many news reports.

And God knows best

Hope it is useful
