Celebrating Independence Correctly: (Fiqh Competitions to Welcome Independence)

Soon we will commemorate the 80th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia. As Muslims, we are commanded to always be grateful to Allah for every blessing He has given us, and independence is a great blessing for which we should be grateful.

Islam not only commands gratitude, but also teaches how every Muslim should express gratitude. In his commentary, Sheikh As-Si'di states that there are three conditions for someone to be considered truly grateful:

  1. Admit in your heart that all the pleasures you receive come from Allah
  2. Praising Allah with his tongue
  3. Using the blessings that Allah gives in things that Allah approves of

If we look at the explanation of Sheikh As-Si'di, we understand that gratitude is not just an expression, but how we are truly grateful in the way that Allah wants. Ridai. Abu Hazim once said:

"The example of anyone who is grateful with his tongue, but is not accompanied by gratitude throughout his body, is like a man who has a garment, but he only takes the ends of it and does not wear it, so that the garment is useless, and does not protect him from heat, cold, snow, and rain.[1]

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Indonesian Independence Day, various competitions will be held throughout Indonesia. This is certainly a good way to do so, but sometimes we find that some competitions are not in accordance with Islamic law. When these competitions conflict with Islamic law, we are expressing gratitude in a way that displeases Allah, rather than in a way that pleases Him.

In this discussion we will discuss several competitions that scholars say are haram and should not be done:

  • A competition in which male participants must resemble women or vice versa; Some competition organizers have taken the initiative to make the competition more exciting by holding competitions that require male participants to dress like women, such as soccer competitions where they wear house dresses or other women's clothing. This may seem funny, fun, and exciting, but many people don't realize that this is a serious matter.forbiddenright. Abdullah bin Abbas said:

لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ God bless you وَالْمُتَشَبِّهَاتِ مِنْ النِّسَاءِ بِالرِّجَالِ

"The Messenger of Allah curse men who resemble women and women who resemble men." (HR. Bukhari)

Al-Imam At-Tabari said:

"The meaning of this hadith is that it is not permissible for men to wear clothes and ornaments that are specifically for women and vice versa."[2]

Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani added:

"It is also not permissible to imitate the way women talk and walk."[3]

Based on the explanation of the scholars above, the competition in which men have to dress like women, especially to the point of imitating the way they talk and walk is... forbidden and cursed by the human being we love the most, namely Prophet of Allah Muhammad Shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.

  • All competition participants pay a registration fee; Sometimes, to attract attention and encourage people to participate in competitions, fantastic prizes are offered. To be able to offer these fantastic prizes, many organizers charge registration fees from all participants. This is prohibited because it is a form of competition. qimar or gambling. In Hasyiyah Al-Bajuri mentioned:

وَإِنْ أَخْرَجَاهُ أَيِ الْعِوَضَ الْمُتَسَابِقَانِ مَعًا لَمْ يَجُزْ … وَهُوَ أَيِ الْقِمَارُ الْمُحَرَّمُ كُلُّ لَعْبٍ تَرَدَّدَ بَيْنَ غَنَمٍ or

"If both parties competing together give out prizes, then the competition is not permitted... and that, meaning gambling which is forbidden, is all forms of games where there is still confusion between profit and loss,"[4]

Based on the explanation above, it is clear that collecting contributions from all competition participants to be used as prizes for the winners is... forbidden because it is gambling.

These are some examples that we have written in this article. We hope that we can be grateful for the blessing of freedom that Allah has given us in a way that pleases Allah, and let us abandon everything that Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, even if it seems pleasant.

Wallahu a'lam bisshowab
