Discussion of the Law of Buying and Selling on Friday

Friday is a very great day, even called as Sayyidul Ayyam or the leader of the other days. It includes Friday prayers, which are obligatory for every Muslim male who has reached puberty, is sane, free, healthy, and not traveling.

Friday prayer is the best prayer[1] , because of the importance of Friday prayers, Allah has emphasized in the Qur'an:

 يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِنْ God bless you God bless you

“O you who believe, when the call to prayer on Friday is given, hasten to remember Allah and leave off buying and selling. That is better for you, if you only knew.”. (QS. Al-Jumu'ah : 9)

The word of Allah SWT in the verse above emphasizes how important Friday prayers are, even Allah commands that when the call to Friday prayers has been announced, every Muslim man who fulfills the obligatory conditions for Friday prayers as explained previously should leave all forms of business that he does.

Al-Imam Ibn Kathir in his interpretation when explaining the word of Allah

وذروا البيع

“….. and abandon buying and selling…..”

He said:

ولهذا اتفق العلماء رضي الله عنهم على تحريم البيع بعد النداء الثاني

“"This verse is the basis of the agreement of all scholars, that buying and selling carried out after the second call to prayer on Friday is forbidden"[2]

From the explanation above, we conclude several conclusions:

First, All scholars agree that buying and selling is prohibited after the second call to prayer for Friday prayers is given.

Second, The prohibition of buying and selling begins from the second call to prayer until the end of Friday prayers.

Third, This prohibition applies to those who are obligated to perform Friday prayers. For those who are not obligated to perform Friday prayers, such as women, the sale and purchase remains permissible.[3].

After all Islamic scholars agreed that buying and selling during Friday prayers was forbidden and that anyone who did so would be sinful, scholars then differed on whether the transactions they conducted were valid or not.

First opinion, Buying and selling carried out by people who are obliged to perform Friday prayers after the second call to prayer is haram and invalid, this is the opinion of the Maliki and Hanbali schools of thought.[4], and the opinion supported by Imam Ibn Kathir from the Shafi'i madzhab[5].

Second opinion, Buying and selling after the second call to prayer for Friday prayers is haram, whoever does it is sinful but the buying and selling is valid, this opinion is the opinion of the Hanafi and Syafi'i schools of thought.

Although scholars have different opinions regarding the validity of buying and selling, their agreement on the sin that will be incurred by anyone who makes a sale when he is obliged to perform Friday prayers is sufficient to encourage us to abandon all trade when the second call to prayer on Friday has been given.

However, in some areas, we witnessed that there were still adult male Muslims who were still buying and selling around the mosque while the preacher was giving the sermon, and only left it when Friday prayers were about to be held., Allahul must'an. This is truly a mistake and a sin that must be abandoned.

And God knows best bish shawaab
