Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud offers a harsh critique of the current state of Muslims. This criticism is primarily directed at the Arab nation. This is outlined in a specific theme in his book. Al-Qur'ân Muhâoh noî fahm 'Ashrî; (Understanding the Quranân; A Contemporary Approach).[1]
A common reality, Muslims today are experiencing degradation of knowledge. In fact, knowledgeable and knowledgeable people are the hallmark of Muslim society. Muslims were once a learned and educated people. Learned and educated because of the knowledge passed down by parents, teachers and scholars'.
Every Muslim at that time was always taught to be the best human being. The best in knowledge and morals, the best in knowledge and manners. Certainly, historical records show that before Western (European) progress and domination, Muslims were already intelligent people, both intellectually and spiritually.
The contribution of Muslims to the advancement of world civilization cannot be denied. European nations owe much to several scientific theories from Muslims. However, today, Muslims are in decline, left behind in ignorance and lethargy.
This was highlighted by Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud, when discussing interpretation Al-Qur'anSurah at-Taubâh verse 105. “Say! Work, and God will see your work.”
Every time God mentions believers, their faith is either used as a motivation or associated with their work. “Those who believe and do good” is a very common phrase in the Qur'an.
The repetition of the combination of the words "Faith and Deeds" is intended to leave a message that "There is no true faith unless it is accompanied by charity". Charity or action is what makes intentions come true. Actions are clear evidence of obedience because of faith in God.
Therefore, according to Dr. Mahmoud, there are no stupid believers; there are only intelligent and knowledgeable believers. However, today, much ignorance is gnawing at the sacred fabric of Muslims. This indicates that they have neglected Allah's command contained in His words, namely, (Al-Qur'an).
This phenomenon creates a new problem, about a disclaimer against a command given by Allah, but Muslims do not heed the command to believe and do good deeds (work).
In fact, Allah clearly and consistently commands us to work. Yet, some Muslims fail to carry out this command.
Most of them spend more time in cafes, karaoke places, street food stalls, hanging out, playing, without any... burden of faith in their hearts.
Dr. Mahmoud then touched on the progress of Europeans because they worked and studied. They demonstrated a strong desire and willingness to learn and work. They were even willing to stay up late at night due to their perseverance in studying and working.
Isn't that what we Muslims are supposed to do? Isn't it true that Muslims who have faith and obedience must diligently study and work?
Shouldn't we, the more intelligent, educated, and learned Muslims, be willing to devote our time to knowledge? A paradoxical reality. Yet that's exactly what's happening today.
When comparing Europeans today with Arabs, Europeans are more diligent, industrious, and committed, demonstrating a strong willingness to learn and work. In contrast, Arabs and their people are mired in ignorance and laziness. Sinking in abject laziness.
The message delivered by Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud serves as a catalyst for Muslims to return to and practice its contents, not simply to be read without practicing and putting them into practice.
Regarding the progress experienced by European nations compared to Muslims, especially Arab society, it is an inevitability that is very sad for Muslims.
May Allah illuminate our hearts, minds, and actions with the light of His guidance, the Quran. And may Allah always connect our souls and minds to be obedient in faith and obedient in learning and seeking knowledge, so that we will always be close to Him. Amen.
