Advice on Worship and Morals from Grand Sheikh Al-Azhar: Prof. Dr. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb

Worship and morals In Islam, there are two sides of the same coin that cannot be separated. Furthermore, the Prophet's hadith reveals the importance of this dimension. morals and its infiltration into Islamic structures in terms of worship, law and behavior.

Related to this, if the deeds of worship bear fruit morals praiseworthy, in the person of the practitioner, then it is proof that he has done it in the most perfect way. Then, knowing rationally, the sacred mission carried by the Prophet Muhammad was established intertwined with morals.

However, if someone continues to behave badly towards others in society, then that is the greatest proof that their worship is useless. One of the hadiths quoted by the Prophet in his sayings is:

مَنْ صَلَّى صَلَاةً لَمْ تَنْهَهُ صَلَاتُهُ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ لَمْ يَزْدَدْ مِنَ اللَّهِ إِلَّا بُعْدًا

"Whoever's prayer does not prevent him from committing evil and wrongdoing, his relationship with Allah will not increase except by growing further apart."[1]

Thus, the message of the Prophet SAW is that, the view that is able to prove, there is an organic relationship that cannot be separated between Islam and morals with the affirmation that acts of worship such as prayer, waking up at night (tahajud), Fasting and Hajj, if not based on moral support, will not be beneficial for those who do it, especially on the Day of Judgment.

Owner morals good, who loves and is loved by others because humble and his manners, will occupy a better position than other people. A principle that is important for many related people to know morals, because this affects a person's worship, especially how he behaves bermu'ârather with humans as well as with God.

Because of that, sharia Islam provides convenience and leeway for people to do things transaction so that an atmosphere of affection and love can provide an umbrella for every community to live happily, cleanly, not polluted by turbidity and envy.

For this reason, Islam is not just a fixed religion, only building a relationship with God, but Islam builds ethics, morals, mu'amalah with each other and even with creatures other than humans.

There is an interesting expression from a modern Arab writer, Mustafa Sadiq ar-Rafi'I; "Even the swords of Muslims have morals"

A high metaphor about morals. Why not, in the hands of a Mu'min, a sword has strict limitations and conditions for its use. So this is where we have to understand that the level of people with morals is high. Never mind doing bad things, even intending to do them is not strictly prohibited, because that is not a reflection of a Muslim who believes inmorals.

Unfortunately, the onslaught of Western culture upon Muslim societies has undermined the norms, rules, and morals of Muslim communities worldwide. Deviations in ethics, morals, and etiquette have forced Muslim societies to follow trend and the western lifestyle that is destructive and leads to destruction.

This condition is increasingly worrying, seeing that western hegemony with its power and sophistication is able to influence and then slowly erode the values that Islamic civilization has instilled in the hearts of humans.

If only a sword is considered to have morals when in the hands of Muslims. So, indeed, if the sword leaves the hands of Muslims, we will see how destruction will hit the world community.
