Sexual Deviance in Society (A Critical Analysis)

Introduction

Living with diversity is inevitable. However, living with conflict is problematic. This can be seen in Indonesian society and throughout the country. Differences in customs, culture, and religion are commonplace. And people can live with mutual respect for one culture and another. Living in a world of diversity is not as easy as it seems. Imagine, people living with neighbors of different faiths, with great hearts, can cultivate brotherhood within a framework of tolerance and live peacefully side by side.

However, harmony in this multicultural society is under serious threat from the recent rise in cases of sexual deviance within society. What forms does sexual deviance take? In this short article, the author will explain the definition of sexual deviance. He will then analyze the forms of sexual deviance, their impacts, and offer several solutions for perpetrators of sexual deviance in society.

Definition

To further sharpen the content of this article, the author will first explain the definition of sexual deviance. The word deviance is defined as an action that goes beyond the accepted norms. Deviant behavior, as defined by Paul B. Horton, is any behavior that violates group or societal norms.

Meanwhile, according to Robert MZ Lawang, deviant behavior is an action that deviates from the norms prevailing in a social system and elicits efforts from those in authority within that system to correct the deviant behavior. Therefore, this deviance is behavior that violates the norms within a group or society. When a social group observes a form of deviance, they will unilaterally reject it because it is inconsistent with behavior, norms, or rules that violate normal customs.

Furthermore, according to Chaplin's perspective, the definition of sexuality is divided into two. First, sexuality is related to reproduction or propagation through the union of two different individuals, each of which produces egg cells and sperm. Second, in general, it refers to behavior, feelings, or emotions associated with stimulation of the genitals, erogenous zones, or the reproductive process. Therefore, after reading the definition of sexual deviation above, it can be concluded that sexual deviation is behavior that goes against normative rules and will cause problems in social and group life.

Forms of Sexual Deviance in Society

Since the Creator created the earth and its inhabitants, including the first humans, Adam and Eve, we have been taught to view the relationship between men and women in absolute terms. Therefore, it is important for the Creator to note that, indirectly, sexual relations are between a man physically and a woman physically. However, today, according to global data, we know that a small percentage, 10%, of the total number of people living on this earth, can engage in sexual relations with their own kind.

In 2016, cases of sexual deviation occurred in several regions in Indonesia. For example, in Jakarta, a sexual harassment case was carried out by an artist with the initials SJ (36) who was arrested for molesting a 17-year-old teenager. In Tangerang, disaster struck (Eno Fariah), the worst case was a case of sexual deviation carried out by three teenagers by inserting a hoe into the victim's genitals. In Bogor, a man with the initials AR (41) was arrested because he was proven to be carrying out online prostitution offering young boys to gays via social media Facebook. It was found that more than 99 minors were victims of sexual deviation.

The cases that have been uncovered represent a small fraction of the actual number occurring in society. There are many more similar cases, but they have not yet been uncovered and brought to the surface. This indicates that this case of sexual deviance is truly serious and of great concern to the public.

In the book "Sexuality: The Magic Button to Achieve Happiness," it mentions mental illness in the sexual sphere. First, homosexuality, often referred to as gay or homo, is a man who is sexually attracted to the same sex and can fall in love with or have sexual relations with a member of the same sex (men). Second, lesbianism is a woman who is sexually attracted to the same sex and can also fall in love, have relationships, and have sexual relations with women. Third, bisexuality, abbreviated as bi, can be a man or woman who is attracted to both genders, both men and women.

Meanwhile, in his paper "Sexual Orientation Deviations: A Sociological Review," Hibatul Wafi mentions several forms of sexual deviation, which are considered dangerous threats to social life. First, homosexuality. Second, lesbianism, both of which have been explained above. Third, pedophilia, which comes from the Greek: pais, paidos, meaning child, and phileo, philos, meaning to love. It refers to adults who channel their sexual gratification toward children. Pedophilia can include exposing one's own genitals to children, kissing, hugging, caressing, and engaging in sexual intercourse with children.

Fourth, pornography and obscenity are abnormal behaviors that violate religious norms and also cause neurotic behavior. People infected with this pornography virus will become addicted like drugs, thus increasing the activity of pornofragism in their brain nerves. Fifth, Frottage (frotase, frotter: groping) is a person who channel their sexual satisfaction by caressing, stroking, and touching someone they like without the victim's awareness. Sixth, Incest is sexual relations between a man and a woman inside or outside of marriage. Both have close family ties.

Seventh, wife swapping (swop = exchange, change), another term is key swapping. The process involves drawing room keys, which contain the wives of each member of the club (sleuteclub = club). This is another name for promiscuity. Eighth, transvestism, is someone who obtains sexual gratification by wearing clothes of the opposite sex. Men wear women's clothing and women wear men's clothing. Finally, transsexualism is a symptom of someone's dissatisfaction with their gender because they feel they have the opposite sexuality.

The explanation of the forms of sexual deviation above is not just a sequence of writings or assumptions. Recently, a case of sexual deviation of the type of Pedophelia, namely adults who channel their sexual satisfaction to children occurred in West Sumbawa NTB, two victims with the initials ZF and FL have become victims of sexual deviation. The perpetrator with the initials SS (37) has been secured by the West Sumbawa Police Chief AKBP Andy Hermawan S.

According to local newspaper Sumbawakini.com, the chronology of the incident is that the suspect, SS, approached the victim while she was playing on the riverbank not far from her house. At that time, SS lulled the victim and told her playmates to go home. Furthermore, a similar sexual abuse case occurred in May 2015 in West Sumbawa Regency, resulting in a fatality. The victim, who was known to be 6 years old, died with a nearly severed neck after being sodomized. Surprisingly, the perpetrator, identified as JJ, was only 12 years old.

The Impact of Sexual Deviance in Society

Sexual deviations occurring in society have a disruptive impact on social life. Families of victims of sexual deviations may resort to actions that can create chaos and unrest within the community, such as revenge, fights, quarrels, and even murder.

Furthermore, the most dangerous impact is that perpetrators of sexual deviance are vulnerable to contracting diseases. Equally dangerous is the recurrence of the same cycle of abuse against victims as they grow into adulthood. This can be psychologically disrupted, and it can take months to overcome the trauma. If the impact of these deviances is not promptly addressed by the authorities, the social order built on established values and norms will be damaged.

Solutions to Sexual Deviance

To prevent sexual deviations from becoming contagious and disease-prone, a holistic preventive approach must be implemented, encompassing biological, psychological, psychosocial, and spiritual aspects. Dr. Adian Husaini, in his book "LGBT Indonesia: Development and Solutions," offers the following solutions: Universities and authorities must actively conduct studies and research on medications for sexual deviants. Furthermore, religious guidance and counseling should be provided to those who engage in social deviance, both in person and online. Modern therapy can even be combined with other forms of treatment, such as cupping, Islamic ruqyah, and so on.

Furthermore, the government and the community are conducting outreach on forms of sexual deviation and restricting liberal campaigns supporting the legalization of LGBT in Indonesia.

Prof. Dr. H. Dadang Hawari, a psychiatrist, provides the following therapy: Psychotherapy is a healing effort for problems related to thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Homosexuality is a psychological stressor (psychosocial stressor) because they experience a sexual orientation disorder, unlike humans in general (heterosexual). This psychotherapy has many variations depending on the needs of both individuals and families.

Social therapy aims to restore adaptive abilities so that individuals can function normally within their families and communities. Furthermore, spiritual therapy provides psychotherapy from a religious perspective. In Islam, for example, verses from the Quran and hadith explain guidance on how to live a life free from anxiety, depression, and so on. Regarding sexual orientation deviations, given the psychological problems experienced by individuals with sexual disorders, one approach is to provide guidance and counseling for those with sexual deviance.

In Islam, people suffering from sexual disorders can be seen as a warning, a test, a trial, or a calamity. In addition to prayer, Islam also uses dua and dhikr to alleviate anxiety, depression, feelings of guilt, sin, and despair. The ultimate solution is for parents to properly educate, care for, nurture, and raise their children. Children should not grow up mentally ill due to a lack of parental attention.

Conclusion

From the above explanation, several conclusions can be drawn. Sexual deviation in society is deeply contrary to normal norms and the social order of life. Perpetrators of sexual deviation must receive specialized therapy, whether it be a combination of modern therapies such as consultations with a psychiatrist, as well as social and spiritual therapy to foster awareness and a strong desire to become normal human beings.

Finally, this sexual deviance must be a major concern for the government. We must prevent the number of victims of sexual deviance from increasing. Sexual crimes are a chain reaction and a dangerous crime.
