Kuam Muslimin Jama'ah Friday prayers Rahimakumullah..

We are currently in the month of Muharram, the new Hijri year 1447. It is called Muharram because Allah ﷻ forbade war and conflict during this month. Furthermore, this month is also one of the sacred months, namely Muharram, Dzulhijjah, Dzulqa'dah, and Rajab. As Allah says in Surah at-Taubah: 36:

 God willing, God willing, God willing, God willing, God willing.

It means: "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve, in a time-determined decree (Lauhul Mahfudh). He created the heavens and the earth, of which four are sacred." (QS at-Taubah: 36)

Imam Fakhruddin ar-Razi in Tafsir al-Fakhrir Razi explains that immoral acts in the haram month are more devastating. Likewise, obedience to Allah has more rewards. He stated:

message: message: message: message God bless you

""The meaning of the haram months is that disobedience in those months will result in heavier punishment and obedience in those months will receive more reward."

Meanwhile, in Tafsir al-Azhar Buya Hamka said; after the Arabs embraced the religion of Tauhid. The Hanif religion or Islamic religion, which was preached by the Prophet Ibrahim and the Prophet Ismail, is said to be four months that are highly respected. This is respected because in those four months there is no fighting and no revenge.

Kuam Muslimin Jama'ah Friday prayers Rahimakumullah..

In the month of Muharram, it is sunnah for us to do several good deeds, one of the good deeds is to provide comfort and happiness to the family on the day of Ashura. As the words of the Prophet narrated by Imam ath-Thabrani in Mu'jam al-Kabir, juz 10 page 77:

 مَنْ وَسَّعَ عَلَى عِيَالِهِ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ لَمْ يَزَلْ فِي سَعَةٍ سَائِرَ سَنَتِهِ

"Whoever spares his family on the day of Ashura, he will always be free that year." (HR ath-Thabrani).

This means that on the day of Ashura, we are encouraged to give alms from our halal wealth to our families, providing for their needs, thereby bringing peace and happiness to all family members. Furthermore, in the month of Muharram, we are encouraged to fast on the day of Ashura. As the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) narrated by Imam Muslim in Sahih Muslim:

 Words: Words: God God willing, God willing, God willing, God willing, God willing.

“From Ibn Abbas RA, he said: Rasulullah was present in the city of Medina, then he met Jews fasting in the month of Ashura, then they were asked about their fast, they answered: today is the day when Allah gave victory to Prophet Musa AS and the Children of Israel over Pharaoh, so we fasted to honor Prophet Musa. Then the Prophet said: We (Muslims) are more important to the Prophet Moses than you. Then the Prophet Muhammad ordered us to fast on the day of Ashura."

On the day of Ashura, it is sunnah for all Muslims to fast. The Prophet even explained the virtues of people who fast on the day of Ashura. As the authentic hadith narrated by Ibnu Majah in the book Sunan Ibnu Majah, Juz 1 page 553:

 قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «صِيَامُ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ، إِنِّي أَحْتَسِبُ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ»

“Fasting on the day of Ashura, I truly thought that Allah would erase the mistakes of the past year.” (HR Ibn Majah).

What we need to know is, what kind of fasting will get priority and reward from Allah ﷻ? The sunnah fast of Ashura is a sunnah fast ordered by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. However, we also need to know that the essence of fasting is not only refraining from eating, drinking, and so on. As the words of the Prophet narrated by Imam Ibnu Majah in Sunan Ibnu Majah juz 1 page 539:

 God willing

"Many people fast, their fasting only makes them hungry" (HR Ibn Majah).

Imam al-Ghazali in Ihya' Ulumiddin juz 1 page 236 explains that many people fast, but he does not fast. What this means is a person who fasts, restrains himself from hunger and thirst, but cannot control his limbs. He cannot control his mouth from gossiping about others, criticizing others, and cannot control himself from immorality. This is what people call fasting, but not fasting.

Furthermore, Imam al-Ghazali as quoted by Sheikh Zainuddin al-Manawi in the book Faidlul Qadir juz 3 page 459 explained that the essence of fasting is that which is accepted and given a perfect reward, not people who only refrain from eating, drinking and things that break the fast.

The perfection of fasting is achieved by one who can restrain himself from what Allah hates. That is, someone who can restrain his tongue from reprehensible speech, his eyes from contemptible glances, his ears from forbidden hearing, and his entire body from sin. By understanding the true nature of fasting, we can train ourselves optimally, because fasting is essentially the foundation of worship and the key to purifying the heart and drawing closer to Allah.

Why do we need to fast? According to Abdurrahman bin Khalaf in the book Bulughul Ghayah juz 1 page 74, he explains that fasting has a tremendous influence in maintaining mental and physical health. Several studies on health explain that fasting is useful for maintaining health, such as lowering blood sugar, reducing inflammation, improving heart health, improving brain health, losing weight, and improving mood.

Fasting also impacts mental health, as it teaches a person not only to abstain from food and drink, but also to refrain from heart ailments such as gossiping, criticizing, and lying. Fasting is a powerful means of improving physical and mental health, and most importantly, becoming a pious person and drawing closer to Almighty God.

With good health in body, mind, and spirit, it is hoped that in this blessed month, we will become pious people, becoming better people, both vertically and horizontally, good to God and good to others. Because the rewards in this blessed month are greater.

Instead, always avoid gossip, hostility, divorce, and other evil deeds. The punishment for evil and evil deeds in this holy month is even more severe. May Allah grant us the mercy of good deeds and keep us away from evil.. Allahumma Aamiin.
