Taliwang Hit by Floods Again: Patience or Resignation?

The shady garden behind the riverside house turned into a lake. The corn and rice fields, planted just a month ago, vanished in an instant. The small stilt house used for resting after plowing in the middle of the rice paddy was also swallowed by the waves. Likewise, the new cow shed next to the garden was also taken hostage by the waves.

Before the flood, usually, every morning after prayer At dawn, the plantation owner rushed to the farm on his motorbike. Upon arrival, he stopped briefly to park, then began to graze his livestock. Occasionally, he would clear weeds from the corn and rice fields that had been planted for just a few weeks.

Just 50 meters from the garden owner, a cattle pen, newly built a few weeks ago, can be seen. The garden owner and the barn owner sometimes chat and joke as they pass each other. They enjoy each other's company. Simple and happy.

However, their happiness was dashed. Nature sent a different message. It rained for two days and three nights. Floods came. A windstorm struck, bringing anxiety. Buildings collapsed, houses sank. Breaking up a warm morning conversation left unfinished.

Such is life: sometimes beautiful in the morning, not necessarily blissful at dusk. A seemingly clear sky can change course in an instant. Rain, storms, and winds are uncompromising. When their destiny has reached its appointed time, they submit to His will.

Taliwang was hit by flooding again. Flooding has plagued the community several times. Residents were anxious, on high alert, and on guard. Villages and sub-districts were flooded. Schools were closed, the economy was paralyzed, and farmers were resigned. Fate struck so swiftly. Yesterday, beautiful gardens, rice paddies, and fields stretched out beautifully, now they were a mess of mud.

The floods that continually hit the residents of Taliwang seem normal. Residents seem to be trained to be patient and grateful. They exchange news on social media quite frequently. There's no swearing, but instead, prayers. Praying for, being prayed for, asking for prayers, and strengthening one another.

If patience and gratitude precede everything, the soul will be at peace. This is how believers should approach reality. Patience when faced with adversity, gratitude when faced with happiness, will ultimately bring wisdom. It's truly admirable. As stated in a hadith:

God willing may Allah bless him and give him peace of mind أَصَابَتْهُ may Allah bless him and give him peace of mind God bless you

The meaning: “How wonderful is the state of the believer, because all his circumstances (bring) good (for him), and this only happens to a believer; if he gets pleasure he is grateful, so that is good for him, and if he is struck by hardship he is patient, so that is good for him.”
(HR. Muslim Number 2999).

The disasters and disasters that befell were indeed serious. But there is room reward which is open. If a believer is aware of that space, then he knows what he must do, namely, be patient. That is proof of faith. A sign that he has finished with Islam and worthy of the title faith.

Abdullah bin Mas'ud said: "Faith is divided into two parts; one part is patience and the other part is gratitude."1 Then Allah rewards the expert with patience and gratitude. In the Qur'an Allah states:

"Indeed, only those who are patient will be rewarded without limits."
(QS. Az-Zumar verse 10).

God willing

"Indeed, in this there are truly signs (of Allah's omnipotence) for everyone who is patient and grateful"
(QS. Luqman: Verse 31).

There is infinite beauty in patience. It is the beauty of a soul that is calm within consent Allah. The heart becomes peaceful, far from turmoil, sadness, narrowness and despair. Because, only patience can get rid of pain and pain.

It could be that the flood hit, because God wanted to cleanse the disease that I In a society. A social disease that humans are no longer able to eradicate. Alcohol, gambling, drugs, adultery, homosexuality, and other injustices. Aren't these diseases dangerous if left unchecked?

The rain brought grace not bringing harm. Every now and then, humans should reflect: why do floods always strike? Perhaps we are often at odds with nature, the mountains, hills, and rocks. Perhaps nature deserves to be cherished, loved, not destroyed, polluted, and exploited.

There's wisdom in every event. There's a lesson to be pondered. Everything is destiny to be faced, not denied. May we be kept away from all sources of evil, disaster, and danger. Amîn ya rabbal alamîn.

And Allah knows bestâb

The floods that struck Taliwang not only left material losses but also offered valuable lessons about resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. In your opinion, how should the community respond to this challenge to not only survive but also emerge stronger?
