Education is one of the main pillars of national development. An effective education system encompasses not only academic aspects but also considers the social, economic, and cultural development of its people.
West Sumbawa Regency, located in West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, is an area with diverse geographical characteristics. Including lowlands, hills, and beaches that affect accessibility to educational services.
Despite efforts to improve the quality of education in this region, there are still various challenges that need to be overcome, such as the limited number of qualified teachers in their fields, high dropout rates, and limited access to educational technology in remote areas.
This paper aims to examine the realities of education in West Sumbawa Regency and develop strategic recommendations to improve the quality of education in the region. A qualitative approach was employed in this paper, involving direct observation at several schools, analysis of education policy documents at the district and national levels, and interviews with key stakeholders such as education administrators, teachers, and the local community.
Reality Review
West Sumbawa Regency covers an area of 1,822.9 kmĀ² and consists of several small islands. Geographically, the region comprises lowlands, hills, and coastlines, each presenting unique challenges in developing educational infrastructure.
The latest statistical data shows that the literacy rate of the population of West Sumbawa Regency still needs to be improved, especially in remote areas that are difficult to reach by formal education services.
Factors such as complex geographical conditions, lack of supporting facilities, and economic limitations of local communities are major obstacles in improving access and quality of education in this region.
Education Policy
The West Sumbawa Regency Government has implemented various strategic policies to improve access to and quality of education. Some of these initiatives include providing scholarships to high-achieving students from low-income families.
New school infrastructure development in remote areas and training to improve teacher qualifications are also underway. However, implementation of this policy still faces challenges in terms of adequate budget allocation and effective oversight of its implementation on the ground.
Challenges in Education
The main challenges facing improving the quality of education in West Sumbawa Regency include the limited number of qualified teachers, particularly in specific subjects such as mathematics and science, the high dropout rate at the secondary school level, and limited access to information and communication technology (ICT) in remote areas. These factors significantly impact the learning process and student academic achievement.
The Role of Society in Education
The active role of local communities is crucial in supporting sustainable educational development. This includes active participation in school programs, support for local educational initiatives, and raising awareness of the importance of education.
Communities can be significant agents of change in improving educational conditions in their areas. Collaboration between schools, local governments, and communities needs to be strengthened to create a learning environment conducive to the development of each child's potential.
From the analysis that has been done to improve the quality of education in West Sumbawa Regency requires stronger policy integration, adequate financial support, and active involvement from all stakeholders.
Therefore, improving the quality of education is not only the government's responsibility, but also a shared commitment of the entire community to create a better future for future generations.
Recommendation
Based on the in-depth analysis that has been carried out, several strategic recommendations to improve the quality of education in West Sumbawa Regency include:
1) Encouraging an Increase in the Number and Quality of Teachers: Through regular training programs, competency-based curriculum development, and attractive incentives to attract qualified educators to the regions.
2) Expanding Access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Development of adequate ICT infrastructure in all schools, as well as training for teachers in utilizing technology as a learning tool.
3) Promoting Active Community Participation: Through the establishment of strong school committees, volunteer programs to support extracurricular activities and physical school development, and increasing awareness of the importance of education at the community level.
4) Strengthening Local Curriculum Policy: By considering cultural values and local wisdom in the education curriculum, so that education can be more relevant and identifiable by the local community.
5) Integrating Project-Based Learning Approaches: To improve students' practical skills through contextual and real-world integrated learning.
Policy Implications
Implementing the above recommendations will not only improve the quality of education in West Sumbawa Regency, but also has the potential to increase student participation, improve graduation rates, and prepare the younger generation to face future global challenges.
Therefore, the importance of education as a long-term investment for regional development cannot be ignored, and all parties need to unite to realize significant changes in the education sector.
