Elementary school students' ability to understand and enjoy mathematics is not easy to find. However, in West Sumbawa, one student demonstrated a strong interest in this subject and successfully demonstrated it through competition achievements.
Afiqah A. Yunda Syarian, student SDI Bina Ummat West Sumbawa, following the event Genius Science Olympiad (JSO) in the Mathematics branch. In the provincial level final round held in Muhammadiyah University of Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, Afiqah managed to achieve bronze medal and stated qualify for the national level.
Afiqah is also an active participant in West Sumbawa Tree of Knowledge tutoring, where he received additional guidance to deepen his understanding of the subject matter, including Olympiad practice questions. This tutoring complemented his learning at school.
JSO is a competition designed to hone students' logical thinking and problem-solving skills, particularly in science and mathematics. The competition runs in stages, from school level to national level.
In the provincial-level competition she participated in, Afiqah took a series of tests that demanded precision and consistency. Despite being faced with questions with a higher level of difficulty than the regular curriculum, she still demonstrated a willingness to try and overcome every challenge.
Afiqah's achievements demonstrate that a well-planned learning process, both within the school and through outside guidance, can boost students' confidence in facing competitive exams. While not her first, this type of participation is a valuable experience for elementary school students.
Student participation in events like JSO is expected to foster a healthy learning culture and provide space for continued development, without focusing solely on results. This can also encourage other students to try similar competitions, whether in mathematics or other fields.
Afiqah is now preparing to compete at the national level, with support from her school and the tutoring institution where she studied. The challenges will undoubtedly be greater, but her experience at the provincial level will provide valuable starting points.
