The sea is one of God's creations, full of wonders and benefits for human life. Covering over 701,000 square kilometers of the Earth's surface, the sea is a source of life, home to an extraordinary ecosystem, and a provider of sustenance for humanity. In Islam, the sea is viewed not only as an ordinary natural creation, but also as a sign of God's greatness and power.
The Sea as Proof of God's Power
Allah created the sea for many extraordinary purposes. It stores vast amounts of water, plays a role in maintaining climate balance, and serves as a habitat for millions of living species. In the Quran, Allah says:
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى سَخَّرَ ٱلْبَحْرَ لِتَأْكُلُوا۟ مِنْهُ لَحْمًۭا طَرِيًّۭا وَتَسْتَخْرِجُوا۟ مِنْهُ حِلْيَةًۭ تَلْبَسُونَهَا ۖ وَتَرَى ٱلْفُلْكَ مَوَاخِرَ فِيهِ وَلِتَبْتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
“And it is He who has subjected the sea that you may eat fresh meat from it and bring out from it ornaments which you wear. And you see the ships sailing through it, and that you may seek of His bounty and that you may be grateful.”
(QS. An-Nahl: 14)
This verse shows how God has subdued the sea for the benefit of mankind. From the sea, humans obtain food in the form of fish, jewelry made from pearls, and transportation routes that facilitate trade and interaction between nations.
The Sea as a Separator between Fresh and Salt Water
One of the miracles mentioned in the Qur'an is the separation between salty sea water and fresh water from rivers which do not mix. Allah says:
مَرَجَ ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌۭ لَّا يَبْغِيَانِ
"He has let the two seas flow, and they meet. Between them is a barrier that neither of them can transgress."
(QS. Ar-Rahman: 19-20)
This phenomenon has been proven by modern science, where there is a boundary (barzakh) that separates sea water and river water so that they do not mix directly.
The Sea as a Form of Torture and Test
The sea is also mentioned in the Qur'an as a means of punishment for disobedient people. One of the famous stories is the drowning of Pharaoh and his soldiers in the Red Sea when they were chasing Prophet Musa and the Children of Israel. Allah says:
فَأَتْبَعُوهُم مُّشْرِقِينَ فَلَمَّا تَرَ ٱلْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ أَصْحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ قَالَ كَلَّآ إِنَّ مَعِىَ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ فَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ God willing فِرْقٍۢ كَٱلطَّوْدِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
"So Pharaoh and his army chased them at sunrise. After the two groups saw each other, Musa's followers said, 'We will surely be overtaken.' Musa answered, 'Never will I be overtaken! Indeed, my Lord is with me, He will guide me.' Then We revealed to Moses, 'Strike the sea with your staff!' So the sea parted and each part was like a big mountain."
(QS. Asy-Syu'ara: 60-63)
This incident shows how Allah made the sea as a means of salvation for His faithful servants, as well as a means of destruction for those who are arrogant and disbelieve in Him.
The Sea as a Reminder of God's Greatness
Besides being a source of life and a testament to God's greatness, the sea also reminds humans of their limitations. Huge waves, storms, and the mysteries of its depths demonstrate that humans are but tiny creatures in the face of the vastness of God's creation. This teaches us to always put our trust in God and rely on Him in all our affairs.
As Allah says:
وَإِذَا غَشِيَهُم مَّوْجٌۭ كَٱلظُّلَلِ دَعَوُا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّىٰهُمْ إِلَى ٱلْبَرِّ فَمِنْهُم مُّقْتَصِدٌۭ ۚ وَمَا يَجْحَدُ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ إِلَّا كُلُّ خَتَّارٍۢ كَفُورٍۢ
"And when they were covered by large waves like a shade, they prayed to Allah with full sincerity to Him. But when Allah rescued them onto land, some of them still turned away. And no one denied Our verses except those who like to betray and disbelieve."
(QS. Luqman: 32)
The sea is not simply a natural creation, but a tangible sign of God's greatness. It holds numerous benefits for life, serves as a reminder of His power, and serves as a means of testing for humanity. In Islam, we are taught to always be grateful for the blessings God has bestowed, including the wonder of the sea, which continues to be a source of life for all creatures on earth.
