Islamic boarding school is a term that refers to an education system based on Islamic values and teachings. Islamic boarding school is the system, culture, traditions, values and way of life that apply in an Islamic boarding school. Pesantren from the word pesantren. Meanwhile, the word pesantren comes from 'santri.'ā€˜

The term 'santri' comes from Sanskrit. 'Santri' is taken from the Sanskrit word sastri, which means 'literate' or 'able to read.' Some also link the origin of the term 'santri' to the English word, 'santri'. sun (sun) and three (three), become three suns.

The term 'santri' can also be interpreted as meaning 'maintain three things', as written in the book History of the National Movement (2015) by Fajriudin Muttaqin and friends, namely maintaining 'obedience to Allah, maintaining obedience to His Messenger, and maintaining relations with the umara'’ (leader).

In the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), the word 'santri' has at least two meanings. First is a person who understands the religion of Islam and its meaning second is a person who worships sincerely or is a pious person.

The term "santri" has long been used to refer to a group or individual who is or has previously studied Islamic teachings at a pesantren (Islamic boarding school).

Both the terms Islamic boarding school, Islamic boarding school and Islamic boarding school, when viewed from the perspective of contemporary studies, this terminology opens up new horizons of knowledge about the meaning of Islamic boarding school. Namely an education system that refers to learning knowledge, manners, morals, with reference to a value system that is based on the system and values of Islamic education.

Islamic education values and systems of course refer to Al-Qur'an And Hadith. These two sources were then developed by someone who was called ā€˜'Kiayi'’. A Kiayi is a person who has deep and high religious knowledge and a close relationship with God.

It is from the kiayi that the students learn religious knowledge and other subjects. The kiayi's calling to teach the students makes him a respected figure in the community. The community then entrusts the kiayi with educating, teaching, and caring for their children. The community also willingly entrusts their children to live at the Islamic boarding school in a dormitory.

By reading the various meanings outlined above, you can gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of Islamic boarding schools. To facilitate this explanation, here's a table explaining them:

Islam is core center from a holistically binding system. Al-Qur'an And hadith as a source of value tarbawi and other values. Islamic boarding school is the system, culture, discipline, which is implemented. Islamic boarding school is the name of the educational institution, institution, or foundation. students, as both subject and object of the system and values studied in the institution.

It is important to know that all these elements are a single unit. inherent (bound to each other). Cannot be separated and must not be changed, either from the system or the values applied.

According to Azyumardi Azra, the values applied in Islamic boarding schools are the same as those applied in Surau (prayer rooms). The term Surau refers more to a langar (house) or musalla (prayer room). Surau is synonymous with its development in the Minangkabau (Munangkabau) region of Sumatra. Pesantren, on the other hand, is more closely tied to Javanese traditions. (Prof. Azyumardi Azra, Traditional Islamic Education Surau in Transition and Moderation, p.146)

Therefore, separating or changing the systems and values that exist in a pesantren is the same as changing and breaking away from it. core center (Islam, Qur'an & hadith) which is the basis, principle and source of all value systems obtained. Kiayi as central figure In a pesantren, we must pay attention and ensure that the system and values run in a balanced manner.

Within the modern education system, the Islamic boarding school's system and values serve as a core safeguard to prevent the system from being eroded and contaminated by values originating outside the Islamic educational system. For example, values originating from modern (Western) culture. This requires careful attention and anticipation to prevent a shift in the vision and mission within Islamic boarding schools.

Furthermore, the terminology of Islamic boarding school (pesantren) is usually equated with the word pondok, such as 'pondok pesantren'. This term is used as a distinction, that the word... ā€˜'cottage'’ refers to general meaning. Term cottage came from Arabic funduuq (ŁŁ†ŲÆŁˆŁ‚) which means lodging. (read Wikipedia).

Pondok is the name of a place, a hut, (pondokan) which common used as a temporary stopover, residence, rest area or study area. That is a glimpse of the meaning and terminology of santri, Islamic boarding school and Islamic boarding school
